Sometimes, a single moment can change everything. During our recent gala, we shared how the vision for our afterschool program began; with a single, unforgettable encounter during a mission trip to Ethiopia. I’ll never forget stepping out of the minivan and seeing a little boy digging through the trash for food, and that image stayed with me. That night, I fell to my knees and prayed, 'Lord, I know you didn’t show me this for my entertainment. What do you want me to do?'

A year later, while visiting a ministry in Ukraine, I saw an after-school program called An Island of Hope. It provided food, tutoring, and mentorship for vulnerable children. In that moment, God reminded me of that little boy in Ethiopia, and I knew exactly what I had to do.

We launched our first Alliance Care Now afterschool center in 2021, starting with just 25 children. Today, by the grace of God, we have eight centers serving children in seven different communities across Ethiopia, including Holeta, Wolisso, Butajira, and Adama.

A Story of Transformation: Batalem Driba

One of the children benefiting from this vision is Batalem Driba, a bright 9-year-old in the 3rd grade at Oda Primary School. Born into a low-income family, Batalem faced significant challenges in her education. Lack of resources and malnutrition affected her academic performance and overall well-being.

In May 2023, everything changed when Batalem joined the Alliance Care Now after-school program at Holeta Genet Church. The program met her needs holistically, providing both educational support and nutritious meals. For the first time, she received personal attention from dedicated volunteers who nurtured her confidence and guided her academically.

Today, Batalem’s grades have improved, and so has her sense of self-worth. She finds joy in learning again, supported by mentors who genuinely care about her success. Volunteers like Brother Abera at Holeta Genet Church continue to make a difference, offering both academic help and emotional encouragement.
